Studies on whether Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) causes cancer have been undertaken in a number of countries over the past 10 years or so.
The latest findings* released yesterday from a study of a million women are ambiguous. Theysay that a causal link between HRT and breast cancer cannot be established.
However, before all we menopausal women breathe a huge sigh of relief, we should look closer at other studies, look at what a range of international experts say and think about what all of this means for us as individuals.
A number of studies have been conducted into various different types of HRT, and a link was found between these and breast cancer. This resulted in many women in Australia deciding not to use or to lower their use of HRT.
The Cancer Council of New South Wales CEO Dr Andrew Penman believes there is an "overwhelming link" between HRT and breast cancer.
The Council cites its own research which has found that there has been a 55 percent reduction in the use of HRT between 2001 and 2005. At the same time there was a 9 percent drop in the rate of breast cancer in women aged over 50 years.
"These results are consistent with other evidence that women can reduce their risk of breast cancer quickly by stopping or reducing use of HRT. So, by reducing their use of HRT, women and their doctors have had a very positive impact on breast cancer in Australia, he said.
